The driver of the grit lorry which hit a 13-year-old boy on Thursday morning has been released by police under investigation.

The driver, a 36-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by driving without due care and attention.

The boy was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, police have confirmed.

Paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service and Wales Air Ambulance, as well as officers from Gwent Police, attended the scene on Thursday.

The Lansbury Park Distributor Road between Bedwas Bridge roundabout and the turn-in into Rudry was closed all day on Thursday and into Friday morning, with diversions in place. The road has since reopened.

Caerphilly County Borough Council leader Sean Morgan said: “Our thoughts are with the young person and his family and we wish him a swift and full recovery.

“As this matter is subject to a police investigation, it would not be appropriate for us to comment on the circumstances surrounding the accident at this stage.”

Gwent Police is continuing to appeal for anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area between 8am and 8.30am on March 9 to come forward.

Gwent Police can be contacted on 101 or through direct message on Facebook and Twitter, quoting reference 2300076857. Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
