Llancaiach Fawr has won two tourism awards after being visited by mystery shoppers.
The 17th-century manor house, near Nelson, has received the ‘Best Told Story’ and ‘Quality Food and Drink’ awards for 2023/24.
What is a mystery shopper?
A mystery shopper is someone who is paid to anonymously visit shops or businesses to review them or to check if standards are being met.
The awards were issued by the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Service (VAQAS), after its representatives visited the Caerphilly County Borough Council-run venue.
The visitors praised Llancaiach Fawr for its gift shop, cafe and restaurant menu, which uses locally-sourced ingredients.
The knowledge of the historical interpreters, who guide visitors around the manor while dressed in character of the servants of Colonel Pritchard, was also highlighted.
Lesley Edwards, the venue’s general manager , said:, “We are so pleased to be recognised for the unique customer experience we provide.”
Council deputy leader Jamie Pritchard, who is the cabinet member for tourism, said: “I am delighted that our much loved visitor attraction, Llancaiach Fawr Manor, has received the recognition it deserves.”
The Welsh Government’s deputy minister for Arts and Sports, Dawn Bowden – who is also the Senedd Member for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney – congratulated staff at the manor for their hard work.
Ms Bowden said: staff “provide visitors with a first-class experience, which also brings our history and culture to life”.
She added: “I hope people will take time over the Easter Holidays to experience Llanciach Fawr.”
