A chapel in Nelson which has stood for more than 160 years could be converted into homes, if plans are approved by Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Penuel Congregational Chapel, which is on the high street, has been closed since 2012. Now, proposals have been put forward to change it into two four-bedroom houses.

The chapel was founded in 1857 and despite not being a listed building, the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaelogical Trust has recommended that a historic building survey should be conducted, prior to any construction work. 

On behalf of the trust, Mike Jones said the chapel is of “historic importance and is culturally significant within the street scene of Nelson”.

It’s located on the same street as Salem Chapel – which is now a funeral directors – and St John the Baptist Church.

A decision on the planning application is expected to be made under delegated powers by June 20.

Similar conversion plans were lodged for a Presbytarian Church in Pentwynmawr earlier this year.
