The Lord Lieutenant of Gwent, Mr Simon Boyle and the Assistant Bishop of Llandaff, the Rt Reverend David Wilbourne cut the ribbon at the Neuadd St Catwg Community Hall in Gelligaer.

The Neuadd St Catwg Community Hall in Gelligaer has been reopened after a £540,000 refurbishment.

The new hall, complete with internet café and committee rooms, was officially unveiled by Lord Lieutenant of Gwent Simon Boyle and the Assistant Bishop of Llandaff, the Rt Reverend David Wilbourne.

Rev Tony Stevens, Rector for the Parish of Gelligaer, said: “These fantastic works to revitalise the community hall mean that we are now able to place the centre right at the heart of community life once again.

“We are extremely grateful for the funding for these works which came from a number of different organisations, and I look forward to seeing how this facility will become a real asset to the local community over the coming months and years.”

The Neuadd St Catwg Community Hall is managed by a group of trustees, made up of four members of the Parish of Gelligaer and four members of the community. The Rector and Churchwardens have delegated the running of the hall to this group.

Rev Stevens continued: “This is a true example of partnership working between the church and the community, and by working together we will achieve our aim of serving the people of Gelligaer.”

At the official unveiling, guests were treated to a selection of songs from pupils from local primary schools, Greenhill Primary School and Glyngaer Primary School.

Funding for the project came from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Community Facilities and Activities Programme, the Big Lottery People and Places Programme, GAVO, Caerphilly County Borough Council, ISSP, Gelligaer Community Council, WCVA Communities First Trust Fund, Communities at One, Gwent Police, Communities First Equalities and Diversities Budget, Welsh Church Act Fund, O2 Grants Scheme and the Parish of Gelligaer.
