Upper Rhymney Primary School is on Oakland Terrace, Rhymney

A primary school in Rhymney has received an impressive report following an inspection in June this year.

Upper Rhymney Primary School was inspected by Estyn and received positive feedback about its atmosphere, supportive staff, headteacher and pupils’ good behaviour.

The report also highlighted that the staff regularly provided “beneficial learning opportunities for pupils” such as outdoor activities, including using the woodland area.

The school, which has 162 pupils, received the report which states: “Upper Rhymney Primary School is a caring and inclusive school, which encourages pupils to learn in a positive atmosphere and to be happy.

“Pupils enjoy the activities and tasks provided and use a wide range of strategies and resources to learn productively. Pupils’ enthusiastic attitudes and readiness to learn during lessons are due to the purposeful working relationships that exist with their teachers and other staff.”

Headteacher of Upper Rhymney Primary School, Samantha King, said: “We are very proud of our Estyn report and the way it reflects on the warmth of the school ethos, and the strong relationships between staff and pupils.

“I am privileged to work with such a dedicated team of staff and governors who are passionate about doing their very best for the children and families in our community.”

There were four recommendations for the school which included challenging pupils through “consistent and effective teaching”, planning progression in relation to numeracy and digital skills, ensuring teachers’ feedback “targets the next steps in pupils’ learning,” and improving resources and outdoor learning opportunities for younger pupils.

This is another glowing report for a school in Caerphilly County Borough after St Gwladys recently received positive feedback from Estyn following a June inspection.
