The cricket season is over for another year

The South East Wales Cricket League season has drawn to a close, with a mixed bag of results for sides across Caerphilly County Borough.

In division one, Blackwood Town were looking to test themselves against the best around after gaining promotion in 2022.

It proved a testing debut season for Blackwood, who could only manage four wins in 20 games. They did manage to avoid the drop however, finishing third from the bottom in tenth. They’ll hope to kick-on and climb further up the league next summer.

For Newbridge in division two, they’d have been hoping to return to the top division following relegation last summer, but it wasn’t to be.

The side could only muster five wins, leaving them in seventh and five spots from bottom. They too will hope for more next season.

There were three sides from Caerphilly in division three this season season, but next summer there will only be two.

Machen did the best of the three, having gained promotion from division four last season. They could only manage five wins however, leaving them in seventh.

Just below them finished Crumlin in eighth with nine points between the pair. Although safe, Crumlin will want to get more than four wins next summer.

The same can’t be said for Pontymister & Crosskeys however, who finished rock bottom in tenth with only three wins. They will play in division four next season.

Down in division eight we find the only side who managed to gain promotion this season in Abercarn. The season came down to the last day where they beat second place Sully Centurions by three wickets to secure the title.

It wasn’t a good season for Cefn Fforest & Maesycwmmer in division nine, who after last season’s push for promotion have been relegated to division ten.

The side registered just three wins and a points total of 95 – some 25 points from the nearest team above them.
