Belgium’s Wout van Aert claimed stage five victory in the Tour of Britain on Thursday – ending his Jumbo-Visma teammate Olav Kooij’s run of four straight stage wins.

Van Aert, 28, has now moved ahead of Kooij in the standings following that win, which saw him cross the finishing line in Felixstowe, Suffolk.

Tour of Britain 2023 stages

Stage one, Sunday 3 September: Altrincham to Manchester

Stage two, Monday 4 September: Wrexham to Wrexham

Stage three, Tuesday 5 September: Goole to Beverley

Stage four, Wednesday 6 September: Sherwood Forest to Newark-on-Trent

Ethan Vernon, of the Great Britain team, finished second, narrowly ahead of BORA-Hansgrohe’s Danny van Poppel.

Van Aert said: “I think it’s up to the others to try and chase us [Jumbo-Visma] now, especially now I have a few seconds in the lead, but we still want the overall.”

Stage six of the Tour of Britain covers 146 kilometres through Essex from the start on Southend-on-Sea’s seafront to the finish on Harlow’s Third Avenue. The stage begins at 11.45am.

The eighth and final stage, on Sunday September 10, sees the cyclists start at Margam Park, near Port Talbot, before finishing in front of Caerphilly Castle.
