Tributes have been paid to South East Wales’ former MEP Allan Rogers, who passed away on November 28 at the age of 91.
Mr Rogers, who was originally from Ystrad Mynach, served in the European Parliament between 1979 and 1984, before representing the Rhondda in parliament between 1983 and 2001.
During his time as an MP, Mr Rogers had roles as opposition defence spokesman and foreign affairs spokesman. He was also part of the Commons Intelligence and Security Committee.
He also served as a councillor on Gelligaer Urban District Council, and later Mid Glamorgan County Council, representing the Hengoed ward.
Before embarking upon a career in politics, Mr Rogers worked as a geologist and spent time working in the USA, Canada, and Australia. He also worked as a teacher.
Caerphilly’s Labour Senedd Member, Hefin David, led tributes to Mr Rogers, who he described as a “huge influence on my politics and my family”.
Dr David said: “My father supported him in his earliest days as a county councillor and they later worked together when my dad was elected to Rhymney Valley District Council.
“Allan’s late wife Ceridwen is my mother’s cousin and together they introduced my parents to each other.”
Dr David did a work experience placement with Mr Rogers in 1997, and said: “His kindness was influential in my continued interest in politics.
“He was a tough campaigner, with former Labour colleague Brian Sedgemore noting that he had the stance of a boxer. Beneath that, he cared deeply about his adopted constituency of the Rhondda and, after retirement, supported me without hesitation in my work as MS for Caerphilly.”
Meanwhile, Caerphilly’s Labour MP, Wayne David, said Mr Rogers “made a massive contribution to public life over many years.”
He continued: “In the last few years of his life, I visited him on several occasions and I got to know a man of huge warmth, integrity and principal.
“He will be missed by many people but his huge contribution to public life and the Labour Party will be remembered.”
Islwyn MP Chris Evans said: “Allan was the first MP I ever met growing up in the Rhondda. Later he became a friend, always encouraging and on hand to give advice when I become an MP.
“Held in high esteem by the people of the Rhondda, he will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”
Chris Bryant, the Labour MP for the Rhondda, offered his “deepest condolences” to Mr Rogers’ family and said: “He will be sorely missed and was a magnificent advocate for the people of the Rhondda through some of its darkest times. RIP.”
