Vaughan Gething during his FMQs since announcing his intention to step down

Outgoing First Minister Vaughan Gething has made changes to the Welsh Government cabinet following the resignations that led to his resignation.

On Tuesday, ministers Lesley Griffiths, Julie James, and Jeremy Miles resigned from the cabinet in protest against Mr Gething’s leadership, alongside counsel general Mick Antoniw.

Later that day, Mr Gething announced he will step down as First Minister and Welsh Labour leader when a successor is chosen.

In the meantime, Mr Gething has made changes to his ministerial team, with backbencher Jack Sargeant coming in as minister for social partnership – a role held by Hannah Blythyn before her controversial sacking in May.

Speaking on Wednesday July 17, Mr Gething said: “I am this evening announcing changes to my ministerial team. I have asked Jack Sargeant, Member of the Senedd for Alyn and Deeside, to join my team as the minister for social partnership.
