The finalists for this year’s Caerphilly Sport Awards have been announced, celebrating exceptional contributions from players, coaches, volunteers, and clubs across the borough.

Held at Bryn Meadows Golf Club on Friday November 8, the awards honour the dedication and achievements of individuals and groups who have contributed to the development of sport in Caerphilly.

The categories and nominees are:

Community coach of the year

This award recognises coaches who have made a significant impact in their community, encouraging participation and development in sport at all levels.

  • Jonah Jones – St Cenydd and Caerphilly Tennis Club
  • Matthew Cusack – Deri M&J RFC
  • Bethan Bushen – Caerphilly Castle Girls and Ladies FC
  • Tara Edwards – Valleys Gymnastics Society

Inclusive coach of the year

This category honours coaches who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to making sport accessible and inclusive for all, particularly those with disabilities or additional needs.

  • Gareth Harper and Dean Thomas – Caerphilly Castle Girls and Ladies FC
  • Kate Miskell – Wattsville FC
  • Lee Meyrick – Valley Taekwondo Academy
  • Rhiannon Hughes– Caerphilly Tennis Club

Lifetime achievement to sport

Recognising individuals who have dedicated many years of service to sport, this award celebrates lifetime contributions to the development and success of sport within Caerphilly.

  • Brian and Alison Huish – Treowen Stars AFC
  • Hillary and Ken Goodyear – Rhymney Valley Athletics Club

Volunteer of the year

This award is for those who have made an exceptional voluntary contribution to sport, giving up their time to support athletes, clubs, and events in the community.

  • John Helmore – Ynysddu RFC
  • Leighton  John – Ystrad Mynach Bowls
  • Ross Duffield – Cwmcarn Paragons Cycling Club
  • Andrea Ambler – Caerphilly Tennis Club

Young Volunteer of the Year (Under 18)

Recognising the commitment and passion of young volunteers under the age of 18, this award celebrates those who contribute to the growth and success of sport in the community.

  • Alexi Pipe – Bedwas Comprehensive and Caerphilly Netball
  • Emilie Allen – Valleys Gymnastics Academy
  • Eva Cecil – Caerphilly Tennis Club
  • Gwennan Edwards – Caerphilly Hockey
  • Valleys Girls Peer Leaders – Valleys Gymnastics Academy

Club of the year

This category honours the clubs that have shown excellence in developing their sport, supporting their members, and enhancing the local sporting community.

  • Abercarn and Islwyn Ladies Bowls Club
  • Caerphilly Castle FC
  • Caerphilly Dragons FC
  • Oakdale Welfare Bowls Club
  • Valley Taekwondo Academy
  • Wattsville FC
  • Ynysddu RFC
