A council course aiming to address gaps in the creative industries has been hailed a success after ‘phase one’.

Six people looking to enter the creative sector have taken part in Caerphilly Council’s ‘All Sewn Up’ scheme, designed to teach how to master sewing machine techniques including threading machines, winding bobbins, and employing various basic stitches.

Supported by the UK Government and funded through the Shared Prosperity Fund, Sam Eastcott from vintage clothing shop, The Circular Studio, trained the six people to upcycle clothing, something Sam does herself at the shop.

The second phase of the scheme is due to start this month, and will delve into clothing patterns, seam finishings, and online marketing strategies.

Participants will also have the unique opportunity to attend a costume design course at Coleg y Cymoedd, further enhancing their skills and career prospects in the sector.

Each week, participants get two sessions totalling eight hours of immersive training, ensuring they develop a strong foundation in skills necessary for a successful career in the creative industries.

With plans for additional courses in December focusing on online reselling and vintage clothing valuation, the programme aims to continue meeting local demand and providing valuable skills sought by the creative industries.
