A Caerphilly-based scheme rehousing used and unwanted toys for disadvantaged children has been given a helping hand ahead of Christmas.

The Toy Box Project, launched in Caerphilly four years ago by father-of-three James Morgan, has gone from strength-to-strength since its humble beginnings.

Originally based out of James’ house, he moved into a shop on Clive Street, Caerphilly in 2022, as he needed a bigger space to keep the growing number of donated toys. Last year, the community interest company (CIC) outgrew the shop and relocated to a warehouse on Bedwas House Industrial Estate.

As Christmas approaches, the 36-volunteer-strong scheme has been given a boost, with 48 Caerphilly County Borough Council employees, as well as staff from construction firm Wilmot Dixon, giving up a combined 66 hours to check and process donated toys.

The efforts, which saw around 270 toys processed, were part of a volunteer day at the council’s Ty Penallta headquarters in Tredomen on November 28.

James thanked everyone involved in the event and said: “I am absolutely blown away at what the team achieved. It’s truly amazing and such a massive help to our team, service, and the children who now have access to even more toys.”

Councillor Carol Andrews, cabinet member for education and communities, praised the efforts of both council staff and Willmott Dixon volunteers: “Our staff and partners have demonstrated the true spirit of Christmas by dedicating their time to such an important cause.

“I grew up in deprivation so I know what it’s like to have no toys”

“The ToyBox Project not only brings joy to children but also highlights the value of sustainability and community support.

“I am so proud of everyone who participated and the positive impact this initiative will have on local families.”
