A memorial rugby match will be played this Boxing Day in honour of the late Caerphilly RFC club legend Fred Brooks.

Mr Brooks passed away on September 3 aged 80.

Known to generations of players at Virginia Park, where he coached and played, and at other clubs, the rugby fanatic, poet, and keen golfer was also known to younger ones as the club’s Father Christmas – a role he played with aplomb.

Through his FC Brooks and Sons removal firm, a company started in 1918 by his father, Mr Brooks was well-known to the community for his role helping others settle into their new homes.

To celebrate Mr Brooks, an over-30s XV will take on an under-30s XV at Virginia Park, with the game kicking off at 1pm on Thursday December 26.

There will be live music from Oscar Hartland, who starred as Neil the Baby in Gavin and Stacey, after the game.

What will you be doing Boxing Day? Why not have a break from the TV and turkey sandwiches and join us at Caerphilly RFC for a fitting tribute to a true club legend? Live music on the day following the game from our very own Oscar Hartland. We will hopefully see you there 💚 pic.twitter.com/aJiqPF0PWZ
