Plans for a new Lidl supermarket in Caerphilly County Borough have been unveiled.

The supermarket chain is looking to build a new store on the site of the former Stagecoach bus depot on Penmaen Industrial Estate, Pontllanfraith.

The bus depot closed in early 2023 after Stagecoach opened a new £7m depot in Cwmbran.

Lidl has said its plans would create around 40 new jobs, including full and part-time roles.

The site would be accessed from the B4254 and include 114 parking spaces, as well as electric vehicle charging points.

The new store would be built to Lidl’s “very latest specification”, and have solar panels on the roof.

In summer 2023, Lidl admitted to Caerphilly Observer it was “exploring options” to open a store in the Blackwood area. It already has stores in Caerphilly, Risca, and Ystrad Mynach.

Pontllanfraith is currently home to a Sainsbury’s, while nearby Blackwood has Asda, Aldi and Home Bargains stores.

Lidl is now seeking feedback on its plans before completing a pre-application consultation. Then, it plans to submit a formal planning application to Caerphilly County Borough Council.

A public information event is being held at the Masonic Hall on Cliff Road, Blackwood, between 3pm and 7pm on Thursday February 27. Residents will be able to ask questions and discuss the plans with members of Lidl’s project team.
