Businesses, research groups, and public bodies across Wales can now apply for grants of up to £250,000 to invest in new machinery and technology.

The Welsh Government’s SMART Flexible Innovation Support scheme has reopened for applications, offering capital equipment grants ranging from £50,000 to £250,000.

The money is aimed at helping organisations buy and install modern equipment, advanced technology, and automation systems to boost productivity and efficiency. Projects that focus on reusing materials and resource efficiency are also being encouraged.

Funding is open to businesses, universities, further education colleges, third sector groups, and NHS health boards.

Since 2023, the scheme has distributed more than £20.1 million to 171 organisations across Wales.

Adam Price, the Welsh Government’s enterprise minister, said the fund is intended to help Welsh organisations improve their output and compete more effectively.

“By supporting investment in modern equipment, automation and advanced technologies, this fund will help organisations increase productivity, strengthen competitiveness and create long-term economic value for Wales,” Mr Price said.

Mid Wales-based REECO Automation Ltd received £100,000 from the scheme in 2025 to build industrial robotics systems.

Rosie Davies, managing director at REECO, said the grant helped speed up the firm’s plans.

“The funding has supported the development of several new products and manufacturing innovations,” she said. “The grant has given REECO an added incentive to accelerate innovation, develop new products and enter new markets.”

Applications for the current round close at 11.59pm on Friday September 25. Funding decisions will be communicated from the week of Monday October 26.
