Gavin Clifton, disability advocate and children’s author

Born with cerebral palsy, 42-year-old writer and disability activist Gavin Clifton adopted a ‘never give up’ attitude early in life.

Mr Clifton, from Pentwynmawr, took inspiration from his parents, who battled to get him into mainstream school.

His experience growing up with a disability has now been shared in a new ebook to help parents of disabled children.

In the ebook, titled Empowering Your Child: Building Confidence and Independence, Mr Clifton recounts the various challenges and obstacles he faced while growing up with cerebral palsy and a speech impediment.

His inspiration for writing the book was to create a tool for parents to see their children’s strengths, rather than their limitations.

“Every child, regardless of their disability, has dreams and potential”, said Mr Clifton.

“This ebook encourages [parents] to challenge societal expectations and equip their child with the tools and confidence to be independent and resilient.”

The book is packed with resources for parents and carers, as well as offering practical advice, emotional support and encouragement for those facing similar challenges.

The ebook also features deeply personal stories about Mr Clifton’s struggles growing up. In these, he recalls learning to walk independently at a young age and overcoming difficulties with his speech.

He explains how vital support from parents is in building confidence and independence in disabled children, and urges other parents to push the same as his parents did – so that others could have the same opportunities as him.

Mr Clifton explained how the book “is not just about overcoming challenges but embracing differences and celebrating progress”.
