A new summer tennis scheme, led by Gwent Police, is aiming to bring together youngsters from Rhymney – and boost health and fitness.

As part of its ‘Respect Rhymney’ programme, officers based in the north of the borough have teamed-up with council officers to run the events.

‘In the right court’ runs each Monday between 4pm and 6pm from Rhymney Tennis Courts, with youngsters of any age welcome.

Inspector Lysha Thompson, leading the programme, said: “It was great to see such a fantastic turn-out for the opening session, with over 30 young people – aged between three and 12 – coming down to the courts to meet officers.

“With a mix of drills, exercises and games, there was something for everyone, and it provided us with a great opportunity to meet the children and their guardians, and, as well as all the tennis on show, strike up a conversation around how we can all make Rhymney a community to be proud of.”

The next session is due to take place on Monday June 9, and will, weather-permitting, be held every Monday until the end of September.

The programme is free, and all tennis equipment provided on arrival.
