St Theodore’s Church, Ynysddu

An Ynysddu church is set to celebrate its centenary with a special programme of events later this month.

Originally, Ynysddu and Cwmfelinfach were part of the wider parish of St Tudor’s Church, Mynyddislwyn.

As the local population grew to serve the mining industry, a prefabricated church was erected further down the mountain to provide a place of worship.

That building was destroyed in a severe storm in 1921, leaving local Anglicans without a permanent home. After several years of using various buildings for services, the decision was taken in 1925 to construct the gothic-style St Theodore’s Church that still stands today.

This year marks 100 years since the laying of the foundation stone on September 23, 1925. To mark the occasion, a series of events will be held at the church:

  • Saturday September 20 – Open Day, 10am to 4pm;
  • Sunday September 21 – Songs of Praise, 4pm;
  • Saturday September 27 – Concert by Rhymney Male Voice Choir, 7pm (tickets £5 on the door).

Organisers have said everyone is welcome to join the celebrations.
