A new self-storage business could open in Rogerstone, after city councillors approved a proposed new development for the Wern Industrial Estate.

Blue Self Storage Ltd has won planning permission for up to 144 storage containers on the site, which is currently used as a car and lorry parking area.

Case officer Adam Foote told Newport City Council’s planning committee the proposal was considered a major development due to its size.

The storage units, if built, will be covered in a “living roof” and a wildflower area would also be planted nearby, he added.

In a planning statement, the agents for the applicant said the proposals would make “efficient use of under-utilised brownfield land” and would also create job opportunities.

Committee members voted to grant planning permission, subject to conditions.
