More than 1,200 children took part in the annual Primary Schools Cross Country event in Blackwood last week.

Held on the Showfield on Thursday October 2, a total of 23 schools participated in the morning session, with 21 schools taking part in the afternoon.

In the morning, St Helens RC Primary School won the Years 3 and 4 girls’ race, while Libanus Primary claimed victory in the Years 3 and 4 boys’ race.

The Years 5 and 6 girls’ race was won by Plasyfelin Primary, while Machen Primary took first place in the boys’ race.

In the afternoon, the Years 3 and 4 girls’ race was won by Pengam Primary, while the Twyn School won the equivalent boys’ race.

Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili enjoyed a double victory in the Years 5 and 6 afternoon races, with the Welsh-medium school winning both the boys’ and girls’ events.

The event was hosted by Sport Caerphilly, which is run by Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Jared Lougher, the council’s sport and leisure services manager, said: “It was fantastic to see so many schools take part in this year’s Cross Country event. The level of enthusiasm and effort from the children was outstanding, and it really showcased the positive role sport plays in building confidence, friendships, and healthy habits from an early age.”

Sport Caerphilly also thanked the schools, teachers, volunteers, and families who supported the event, as well as pupils from Coleg y Cymoedd who gave up their time to help.
