Construction work on the new “first-class” Plasyfelin Primary School is underway.

The development is being built within the current grounds of the school, in Churchill Park.

The £23-million development will have capacity for up to 420 pupils, enhanced nursery provision, and sport facilities available for use by the school and the wider community.

The new school, which is being built by BAM Construction Ltd, will also boast a range of ‘green’ features and will become the council’s first net zero school.

This project is being jointly funded by Caerphilly Council and Welsh Government through the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.

Construction will take place in phases, with children learning in temporary classrooms during the building period.

Interim council leader Jamie Pritchard said: “It’s fantastic to see work commence on this exciting new school development, which will deliver a modern, net zero carbon school that meets the demands of our learners, supports our decarbonisation ambitions and provides high‑quality facilities for the benefit of the wider community.”

Cllr Pritchard, who represents the Morgan Jones ward, where the school is located, added: “I’m looking forward to seeing work progress on this impressive facility, which will benefit local school children as well as the wider community.”
