More than 8,000 bin collections have been missed across Caerphilly County Borough so far this year, new figures show.

Cllr Janine Reed, an independent who represents the Ynysddu ward where the most missed collections have been recorded, called the findings “very poor”.

She said the 1,643 missed collections in her ward, between January and the end of August were in sharp contrast to other areas of the borough.

Behind Ynysddu, the other wards with the most missed bin collections are St Cattwg with 1,056 and Risca East and West with 908.

“How can Caerphilly County Borough Council justify these figures?” asked Cllr Reed.

At the other end of the scale, the areas recording the fewest missed collections are Gilfach with none, Moriah and Pontlottyn with seven, and Crosskeys with 19.

In response, a council spokesperson looked at the missed collections figures in the context of the borough’s overall scale of waste management operations.

“Our performance data shows that missed collections for the first quarter of 2025/26 are the lowest for the last three years at a rate of 0.01%,” they said.

This is lower than the rates over the previous two years, which was reportedly 0.02%.

On the issue of missed collections, the council spokesperson said they could be caused by “a number of unforeseen circumstances such as vehicle breakdowns or access issues”.

“It is important to note that our crews return as quickly as possible to collect any missed locations,” the spokesperson added.

“We will continue to work hard to further improve our performance levels as we deliver this vital service to 82,000-plus homes across the county borough.”
