An Aber Valley-based community arts group has been awarded a £5,000 boost from the National Lottery.
Y Bowlen Werdd will use the grant money to continue with its poetry project, host an art exhibition featuring local artists’ work, and set up a community art forum.
The group has been successfully running the Tatws Siôn Cent poetry project for the last three years, which sees local people write poems about their area, which are then published in a booklet each year.
The group now is looking to expand its arts provision in the area by hosting a community arts forum to provide a platform for local creatives and organisations to get together to discuss and share ideas.
Garmon Gruffydd, from Y Bowlen Werdd, said: “Thanks to this funding, we’ll be able to push on with showcasing creative talent from the Aber Valley and build a network of groups, venues and volunteers who want to see more arts activities in the valley.”
The first community art forum event, which is open to all, will be held at Nazareth Community Centre, Abertridwr at 6.30pm on Wednesday December 10.
The 4th edition of the Tatws Siôn Cent poetry booklet will be published next year, and an art exhibition featuring the works of artists from the Aber Valley will be held early next year.
It’s named after Siôn Cent, a 14th century Welsh poet who lived in Abertridwr. Legend has it that Siôn Cent tricked the devil into helping him harvest potatoes.
More information can be found on the group’s Facebook page.
