Primary school pupils have been busy planting trees along the boundary of an upcoming housing development in Abertridwr.

Members of Ysgol Ifor Bach’s eco committee planted the apple and cherry trees on Friday November 7.

Caerphilly-based housing association United Welsh is behind the 152-home development, which is being built on the site of the former Windsor Colliery.

Dian Morris, the school’s acting headteacher, said: “Our eco committee thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a tree planting day with United Welsh.

“The trees look fantastic in our garden area and make a lovely addition to the school.

Pupils planting trees

“Thank you to United Welsh, Landcraft and Prichard’s for teaching pupils all about tree planting.”

The housing development, which is being built near the school, will include houses and apartments for social rent, affordable rent and sale on the site next to the Welsh-medium primary school, according to United Welsh.

Ben Hartland, development project manager at United Welsh, said: “This development is not just about delivering high-quality, affordable homes, but it is also an exciting chapter for the community in Abertridwr.

“We were delighted to work with pupils and staff at Ysgol Ifor Bach to plant five new trees along the boundary of the site.

“The trees make a fitting addition to the school’s outdoor area and demonstrate our commitment to putting the community at the heart of this development.”

A mural celebrating the heritage of the Aber Valley, created by the pupils alongside Ystrad Mynach-based illustrator Chris Morgan, was also recently unveiled at the site.
