School children from across Caerphilly County Borough have been rewarded for their participation in a competition, aimed at helping reduce the speed of traffic outside their schools.

The primary school pupils were asked to design a road sign poster for use outside their schools to remind drivers to slow down to 20mph.

Pupils from St Gwladys Primary, Plasyfelin Primary, Blackwood Primary, Cwmaber Infants and Cwmaber Junior Schools were involved in the competition. The winners and runners up from each school were invited to attend a special presentation at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters where they received their prizes from the Mayor, Cllr Vera Jenkins.

Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection, engineering and transport said: “This competition was excellent in that it has helped raise awareness of some important road safety issues among school children across the county borough.”

The winners received a mock-up of their road safety design on a sign as their prize, as well as vouchers.
