NRW investigates fuel spill into stream in Caerphilly

Cleaning efforts are being made to the stream running near Asda

Natural Resources Wales is investigating the source of a fuel spill into a stream in Caerphilly after residents reported a strong smell of petrol.

Contractors have been seen near the Asda petrol station cleaning up the pollution, but it is understood the site is not the source and the petrol station remains open as normal.

NRW said its investigation suggests the likely source of the pollution is in the nearby Churchill Park area.

Jon Goldsworthy, duty incident manager for NRW, said: “We’re investigating a fuel pollution incident affecting a stream in the Pontygwindy area of Caerphilly.

“Our investigations so far have indicated that the source of the pollution is in the vicinity of Howard Drive, Dyfed Drive and Davies Drive near Churchill Park.

“We’re asking residents to check for any possible leaks from fuel tanks or similar sources that may be entering surface water drains.

“Fuel absorbent booms and pads have been placed to help contain the pollution and our officers will continue working today (Monday April 6) to try to find the source as quickly as possible.
