The headteacher at Blackwood Comprehensive School has paid tribute to former pupil Lainie Williams, who died last week aged just 17.

Lainie, 17, died at her home in Wheatley Place on Thursday November 13. A 38-year-old woman was also taken to hospital with “serious injuries” but has since been discharged.

Headteacher Jane Wilkie said: “The whole school community is devastated to learn the dreadful news that our former pupil, Lainie Williams, was killed in the tragic incident in Cefn Fforest last week.

“Lainie left Blackwood Comprehensive in 2024, after sitting her Year 11 examinations. She was a lovely, warm, and caring pupil, who was a loyal, popular, and thoughtful friend.

“Lainie is remembered fondly, and she will be sadly missed by all in our school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lainie’s family and friends at this very difficult time, along with all those who have been affected by this tragic event.”

Cameron Cheng, 18, from Newbridge, was charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a bladed article in a public place. He appeared before both Newport Magistrates’ Court and Cardiff Crown Court earlier this week, with a trial date set for May 2026.
