Work to convert a former meals on wheels depot in Rhymney into a community gym is nearing completion, Caerphilly County Borough Council has said.

Earlier this year, the council gave the building – which is near the St Clare’s sheltered housing complex – to JM Fitness CIC via a Community Asset Transfer (CAT).

The group behind the new gym are now completing the final refurbishment tasks before opening to the public.

JM Fitness CIC has also been busy securing funding to boost the gym’s sustainability. A funding application for solar roof panels and electric radiators is expected to be submitted shortly, following advice from the council’s decarbonisation and energy teams.

Plans for new community gym move step closer

To celebrate progress and raise additional funds, a community fundraiser is planned for Friday November 28 at Abertysswg Working Men’s Club from 7pm to 11.30pm.

Councillor Nigel George, cabinet member for corporate services, said: “I’m absolutely delighted with the progress the group has made in taking on and working towards opening the gym in Rhymney.

“Their commitment and hard work are truly commendable, and I look forward to seeing the doors open and the facility thriving as a valuable asset for the community.”

Caerphilly Council is expanding its use of CATs in the hope it will encourage more groups to take over surplus or unwanted buildings, helping the local authority to save money by trimming its estate.

Hopes more unwanted council sites can be handed to community groups
