The Melody Makers Choir is aiming to raise £4,000

An Ystrad Mynach-based ladies’ choir has been chosen to perform at a prestigious festival next year, which will showcase choirs from across the world.

The Melody Makers is set to perform at the North Wales Choir Festival in Llandudno in February, but needs to raise £4,000 to get there.

The choir has launched a fundraising campaign to cover travel and accommodation costs for its 20 members, with the event being held on February 7 and February 8.

The Melody Makers was formed in 2010 by the late Lyn Cushing, who passed away in March 2020. She was integral in planning and fundraising efforts for the new breast care unit at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017.

Since Lyn’s passing, the choir has continued to thrive in her memory, regularly performing at local events, in care homes, and at charity fundraisers. It also hosts regular gala concerts.

Last year, it was crowned winner of Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr FM’s (YYFM) Christmas choir competition.

To support the journey to Llandudno, the choir is organising several fundraising events, including a family quiz and karaoke night, as well as a clothes swapping event.

It has also set up an online fundraising page, which has so far raised £235 towards the £4,000 target.

“We’re incredibly proud to have been selected,” the choir said. “This festival is not only a chance to showcase our hard work — it’s a tribute to Lyn’s legacy, and we’d love the community’s support to help us get there.

“We are a south Wales choir with heart, harmony, and a dream to sing in north Wales.”
