GE Aerospace based at Nantgarw

The managing director of Nantgarw’s GE Aerospace Wales has said a £19 million upgrade of the site will secure the future of its global operations.

Employing 1,350 highly skilled workers, the firm, which carries out aircraft engine maintenance, is deemed an ‘anchor company’ by the Welsh Government because of its importance to the economy.

The three-year refurbishment plan will see upgrades to more than 70,000 square feet of roof space, as well as improvements to building cladding, insulation, and glazing installations. It is the single largest at the site since 1999.

Formerly known as GE Aviation Wales, the company said the project will “enhance critical infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and advance sustainability initiatives”.

Stephen Edwards, who has been managing director at Nantgarw since the end of 2024, said: “This investment reflects GE Aerospace’s commitment to operational excellence and sustainability.

“By modernising our infrastructure, we are not only enhancing our capabilities but also creating opportunities to support the next generation of engines and renewable energy projects.

“This investment secures the future of global operations right here in Wales, the gateway to the European aerospace market.”

GE Aerospace Wales runs a highly coveted and competitive apprenticeship programme, which currently has 43 trainees on its books supported by Coleg y Cymoedd.

First Minister Eluned Morgan welcomed the investment and said: “The plant has been a central part of the economy of South Wales for years, providing high quality jobs for generations of Welsh workers.

The GE Aerospace site in Wales is home to the GE90115B engine which supports a global customer base

“This investment by GE Aerospace is a major vote of confidence in Wales and is great news for the local community, the local supply chain and especially the staff – not just the current workforce, but the workforce of the future.”

The redevelopment of Nantgarw, which this year celebrated its 85th anniversary, is part of GE Aerospace’s broader strategy to invest £104 million across its European sites by 2026.
