A new respite centre for adults and children could be built on part of the former Pontllanfraith Comprehensive School site.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has launched a pre-planning consultation on the proposals for a new centre to support carers.
Respite services offer breaks to family carers by providing short-term support for the person they look after, giving them time to rest.
“Respite services play a crucial role in promoting independence, offering enriching experiences and giving parents and carers essential opportunities for rest,” the council said. “Enhancing the availability and quality of respite provision will ensure families can continue to provide care at home and avoid costly residential placements.”
In response to growing demand for respite services in the borough, the council said it initially looked at refurbishing existing services but has instead opted for a new, purpose-built centre.
It is hoped this will “consolidate services into a collocated, modern location, improving coordination and ensuring services remain future-proof”.
If the plans are approved, adult and children’s respite services would be housed in their own buildings, along with garden seating areas, as well as play equipment for younger visitors.
The leader of the council said the creation of a new respite care centre is a “moral obligation” for the local authority, and has encouraged residents to contribute their views.
Cllr Jamie Pritchard added the authority would spend “millions of pounds of its own resources to support children and adults with learning disabilities”.
“Austerity is not a reason to scale back on supporting people who need support the most,” he added. “I’m extremely proud to be launching this pre-application for a brand-new respite centre in Pontllanfraith.
“We’re determined to invest in respite care so those in most need can get the support and care they deserve.”
