Pollution was spotted in a tributary of Nant Caeach on January 3

Environmental regulator Natural Resources Wales has launched an investigation after pollution was reported in a tributary of Nant Caeach near Nelson.

NRW said it was told about the pollution on Saturday January 3 and later identified the source as a slurry spill. Nant Caeach flows into the Taff Bargoed, which in turn flows into the River Taff.

In a statement, NRW said: “We’re aware of recent pollution affecting the Taff Bargoed and its tributaries near Nelson, Caerphilly.

“Our officers investigated and identified the source as a slurry spill. The source of the pollution has now been stopped, and the operator has made efforts to contain the pollution.

“You may notice some discoloured water along a stretch of the river, but this is expected to clear over time.

“Thank you to everyone who reported this to our incident line – your reports help us respond quickly.
If you spot any further issues, please report it to us 24/7 using our online form https://orlo.uk/Lisq5, or call our incident line on 0300 065 3000.”

While there have been previous slurry spills from nearby Gelliargwellt Uchaf Farm, NRW said it would not be naming those responsible while its investigation

A spokesperson for Bryn Group, which owns the farm, said: “We are aware of the incident, and we are working with NRW to investigate what happened.”
