Nearly two decades ago, Katherine Hughes learned of the plans to close Caerphilly Miners Hospital and sprung into action, knocking on neighbours’ doors to gather their views.

In the years that followed, Katherine spearheaded the drive to turn the former hospital into the thriving community centre it is today.

Now, she is stepping down as the centre’s chair – with the community gathering to pay tribute to her for her years of leadership, dedication and service.

Her leaving party, held at the centre on January 24, brought together trustees, volunteers, partners and supporters from across the many activities based at the Miners.

Addressing those present, Katherine thanked attendees for their time and support.

“Thank you for giving up your precious Saturday afternoon to come here. I’m somewhat overwhelmed by how many of you are here today,” she said.

She acknowledged the wide range of people who have contributed to the success of the Miners, including fellow trustees, stewards, and volunteers.

“Together we saved the building, but we have also done so much more.”

Katherine reflected on how the Miners’ Institute has developed into a welcoming and inclusive community hub: “We’ve created opportunities for people to flourish and enjoy doing things they are passionate about. The Miners is a place to have fun, learn new things, be kind to each other and show mutual respect. It shows how important it is to share experiences and support one another.”

Looking back on her time as chair, she said the occasion was about celebrating the people behind the organisation’s success.

“Today, for me, is about celebrating the positive dynamic of the people here. Your support, encouragement, ideas and voices have led the Miners to thrive. I’ll take credit for some of this, but as I learned many years ago, the comfort is in sharing. This has been a great pleasure, and I would never have kept going without you.”

Katherine continued: “We had many happy and productive years, achieving a great deal in profile-raising and fundraising. We received several awards and welcomed special visitors, including King Charles in 2017 and Cerys Matthews in 2021, as well as hosting memorable parties, anniversaries, wakes, and centenary events,” she said.

She also highlighted the value of external support. “We benefited from visits by politicians from all parties and at all levels and were extremely fortunate in securing funding, good advice, and strong alliances.”

Former Caerphilly Assembly Member and Gwent police and crime commissioner Jeff Cuthbert will take over as chair of the board of trustees.

Mr Cuthbert, who has been involved in the project team for many years, praised Katherine’s impact: “The success is visible all around us – the building, its décor, its facilities, its grounds and, of course, the activities it hosts.

“While no single person makes a team, one person can make the difference. Without hesitation, I can say that in terms of the Caerphilly Miners’ Centre for the Community, Kath Hughes is that one person.”

Katherine will continue to play an active role at the centre as a member of its committee.
