Gerwyn Price celebrating during his Premier League Darts Night 2 win in Antwerp

Gerwyn Price saw off Michael van Gerwen to clinch his first Premier League Darts night win of the campaign.

Price, from Markham, beat the Dutchman 6-3 in the Night 2 showpiece on Thursday February 12 to secure maximum points and the £10,000 prize.

Opening what was the first-ever Premier League night held in Belgium, Price beat Gian van Veen in the deciding leg to set up an all-Welsh semi-final encounter with Jonny Clayton.

Price again sealed victory in the deciding leg, before facing Van Gerwen in the final in Antwerp.

The Iceman took a two-leg lead against Van Gerwen, who won last week’s opening night and was until that point unbeaten in this year’s campaign.

But the world number four responded to draw the game level at 2-2.

Price then won three legs in a row to take a 5-2 lead, but squandered three match darts to allow Van Gerwen to pin double four to reduce the arrears to two legs.

However, Price didn’t have to wait long to seal victory, finding his fourth 180 before pinning double 20 to run out a 6-3 winner – averaging upwards of 104 in the process.

“I started off really slow this evening, I felt really edgy. Losing last week, you want to get off to a good start,” reflected Price, who was beaten 6-5 in the first round by Luke Humphries last week in Newcastle.

“I know I’m playing well, but you still have to do it on the big stage. Gian [van Veen] had a shot at the bull to beat me, and I could of been going home.

“I think I’m playing some of the best darts I’ve ever played, I’m just not winning tournaments, but that will come.”

He added: “If I keep playing the way I am, there’s no way I won’t pick up a major title.”

Premier League Darts heads to Glasgow for Night 3 on Thursday February 19, where Price takes on Clayton once again in the opening round.
