Risca Comprehensive is holding its annual 'Walkies for Autism' event again this year
Risca Comprehensive is holding its annual ‘Walkies for Autism’ event again this year

Pupils and staff at Risca Comprehensive will be walking two miles later this month to to raise money for the school’s Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) centre.

The walk, around Cwmcarn Forest Drive, will take place on Saturday April 26 from 10am.

The centre helps young people aged between 11 and 16 develop essential life, social and academic skills to prepare them for the future.

Last year’s walk raised enough funds to redevelop the centre’s garden space, allowing pupils to enjoy a calming outdoor space and learn gardening skills – including growing their own vegetables.

“Last year, our project used the funding to further develop the allotment, allowing us to grow more vegetables,” said Deb Howells, who runs the ASC centre.

“We even made chutneys and jams from what we harvested. Funds raised this year will help us to focus on improving our wellbeing area for Emotional Literacy Support Area (ELSA).”

Nick Rutter, organiser of the event, told Caerphilly Observer, he expects around 25 people to take part this year, while a GoFundMe online fundraiser has been set up to support the event.

Martin Hulland, headteacher of Risca Comprehensive, said: “I’m delighted to see this event return to the school calendar for 2026. It is always very well attended, and I’m sure this year will be no exception. My thanks go to the organisers and everyone who takes part.”
