Six supported living apartments can be built in Oakdale, helping residents live independently.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has granted planning permission for the project near Oakdale Athletics Club, where a separate application for 21 new homes was approved last year.

Housing association Bron Afon is behind the proposals for the assisted living accommodation, which its agent said would “make a valuable contribution to meeting an identified local need within the county borough”.

Each of the homes would have one bedroom, an en-suite, and a kitchen and living area – and one of the apartments would be used by staff.

It is expected the staff will assist residents in daytime hours with “practical” matters ranging from managing bills to support with life skills “all aimed at enabling residents to live independently and sustain their own accommodation”.

In a report, council planners said the aim of the project is to “provide a transitional step, enabling residents to progress to full independent living”.

They said specialist accommodation is “much-needed” and the application did not draw any objections during a recent public consultation period.

The officers granted planning permission, subject to conditions.
