Rail services on the Rhymney line will be suspended next week for essential maintenance works in Caerphilly tunnel.
Transport for Wales (TfW) has confirmed that no trains will run between Rhymney and Cardiff from Sunday, February 22 to Saturday February 28.
A TfW spokesperson said maintenance teams will be working inside the Caerphilly tunnel to carry out “vital masonry repairs and waterproofing work”.
The spokesperson added that closing the line this week, during the half-term holiday, would have meant disruption for fans getting to and from Cardiff for Wales’ Six Nations clash with Scotland on Saturday February 21.
Rail replacement bus services will operate throughout the closure.
From Monday February 23, replacement bus services from Bargoed will run to and from Cardiff Central but will not call at Cardiff Queen Street. Meanwhile, replacement services from Rhymney will terminate at Cardiff Queen Street and will not continue to Cardiff Central. Transport for Wales said the split arrangement is designed to minimise delays by avoiding city centre traffic.
The spokesperson added: “We know passengers on the Rhymney line have faced significant disruption over the past year [for electrification works], and we’re grateful for the patience and understanding communities along the line have shown. We’d encourage everyone to check our app or website before travelling for the latest travel information.”
