Two choirs from Caerphilly County Borough will take part in a celebration of women’s choral music this weekend.

The Festival of Female Voices, which is being held on Saturday March 7 – the eve of International Women’s Day – brings together singers from across south Wales

Ystrad Mynach-based Melody Makers, and Cefn Hengoed Ladies Choir, will represent the borough alongside 12 other choirs from across South Wales.

The ticketed gala concert will take place at Maesteg Town Hall from 7.15pm to 9.25pm.

The event celebrates the growing strength and popularity of female choirs across Wales. While Welsh male voice choirs are internationally recognised, the Festival of Female Voices shines a spotlight on women’s choirs.

The gala concert marks the grand finale of the inaugural festival – a full day of empowering workshops, rehearsals and performances celebrating women in music.

As part of the festival, singers will take part in a series of workshops designed to develop vocal skills, build confidence and bring the choirs together ahead of the evening performance.

During the morning session, participants will rotate through three different workshops led by experienced choir leaders David Fortey, Jess Robinson, and Jane Coles. Each session will focus on different aspects of choral singing, offering singers the opportunity to learn new techniques, refine their sound and sing with performers from other choirs.

In the afternoon all 14 choirs and more than 350 singers will take part, performing a varied programme of music. This massed choir rehearsal will prepare the more than 350 singers for the evening gala concert finale, when all fourteen choirs will perform together as one.
