A new operator is being sought to take over the running of Blackwood Miners’ Institute.
The ’Stute was saved from being ‘mothballed’ under council cost-cutting measures at the start of last year, and following widespread public opposition.
Since then, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet has agreed to look at other ways of running the Grade II-listed venue it has been subsidising by £350,000 annually.
In December, the cabinet backed a proposal for a new management model that will see an established operator – yet to be selected – take over its day-to-day running.
The council will retain ownership of the building under these new arrangements.
Expressions of interest to take over the ‘Stute’s management can now be submitted to the council.
Cllr Jamie Pritchard, who leads the local authority, said: “We are working hard to ensure we can secure a bright new future for this historic venue, without the need for high levels of public subsidy.
“A new operator model will allow greater opportunity to attract grant funding which the council cannot access, so this is a positive step forward and we hope progress will be made to secure a new operator for the future.”
He added: “We want to attract an operator with a clear vision and bold strategy for Blackwood Miners’ Institute and we look forward to receiving the bid.”
