Rail passengers using the Rhymney line over the bank holiday weekend are being warned to expect disruption as engineering works take place across the Cardiff and Valleys network.

Transport for Wales said all lines through Cardiff Queen Street railway station will close on Sunday May 24 and bank holiday Monday May 25 while upgrades are carried out.

The closures will affect services across several Valleys routes, including the Rhymney line.

Rail replacement buses will operate between Rhymney, Caerphilly, and Cardiff Central railway station on both days.

TfW said trains from Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil would continue running into Cardiff Central via the City Line through Fairwater.

Other disruption includes replacement buses between Radyr and Cardiff Central via Llandaf, Cathays and Cardiff Queen Street, while Penarth to Coryton services will terminate at Cardiff Central.

Passengers travelling to Cardiff Bay are being advised to use replacement bus services, with tickets being accepted on selected Cardiff Bus routes at no extra cost.

TfW also warned services could be busier than normal due to industrial action affecting West Midlands Railway services between Shrewsbury and Birmingham and Hereford and Birmingham on Friday and Saturday.

With hot weather forecast over the bank holiday weekend, TfW said popular coastal routes to destinations including Barry Island and north Wales were also expected to be busy.

Sarah Higgins, operations director at TfW, said passengers should check before they travel and allow extra time for journeys.
