Bree Cronin with her Commonwealth bronze medal

Abertridwr para-athlete Bree Cronin has won a bronze medal in the discus at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 23-year-old finished third in the women’s F42-44/F61-64 final on Wednesday July 29, throwing a distance of 36.00m.

Cronin finished behind her Welsh teammate and training partner Funmi Oduwaiye, who took silver with a throw of 38.52m, and Nigeria’s Goodness Nwachukwu, who won gold with a world-record throw of 39.66m.

What is the F44 classification?

F44 is lower limb competing without prosthesis affected by limb deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power or impaired passive range of movement.

Both Welsh athletes train together in Cardiff under coach Josh Clark.

Asked how it felt to add to the Team Wales medal tally, Cronin said: “It feels good. I don’t think I could have asked for anything else. I was struggling with how I was going. It was a lot of ups and downs, but I got it and that’s what matters really.”

Commenting on team mate Oduwaiye, Cronin added: “I couldn’t have done it without her. I think with each other, we’re a really strong duo.”

The medal marks a significant milestone for Cronin, who previously planned a career in the armed forces.

At 17, she was enrolled in military college and competing in able-bodied discus when she was struck by a car outside Cardiff Central railway station.

Bree threw a distance of 36.00m

She suffered a brain injury, a fractured arm and multiple leg fractures, ending her hopes of a military career.

Following a long recovery, Cronin returned to the sport as a para-athlete in 2024.

She previously finished fifth at the 2025 World Championships in Delhi before making her Commonwealth Games debut this summer.

Bree is not the only sporting star of the family – her uncle Denys boxed professionally, even getting in the ring with Chris Eubank in 1990. Her brother Brook boxes and her cousins are weightlifters.
