A Caerphilly barbers is celebrating ten years in business – with loyal customers helping it continue to thrive despite strong competition from other barbers on the same street.

Theo Aspros and Georgina Aspros run Aspros Barbers at 53 Cardiff Road, Caerphilly, and have seen plenty of changes over the last decade.

Today, there are around seven barbers operating in Caerphilly town, making competition a familiar part of running the business.

But the team at Aspros says having competition is not necessarily a bad thing.

“Competition is always going to affect you,” the owner said. “But luckily, we’ve got a good clientele and we really appreciate all the support.”

The barbers has also adapted to changing customer habits, moving towards an appointment-based system while continuing to accommodate walk-in customers when there is availability.

Customers can book an appointment in advance, walk in when possible or contact the shop to see what availability there is.

Over the past ten years, the business has also experienced wider changes on the high street, particularly as the cost of living has increased.

“Everything has become so expensive, so people are having to change their priorities,” the owner said.

Despite those pressures, Aspros has continued to build a loyal customer base and remains busy, with the team working together to provide a service that keeps customers returning.

Hair trends have changed considerably over the past decade too, with styles including mullets, skin fades and taper fades among the popular choices.

But it is not just adults who sit in the Aspros chairs. The team also cuts children’s hair, including young customers who may find going to the barbers a difficult or daunting experience.

The owner has developed particular patience when working with children who do not like having their hair cut.

“You’ve got to be patient with them and take your time,” Theo said.

That patience is part of the personal service the team aims to provide, with the barbers working together to make customers feel comfortable.

For the owner, barbering is also a family tradition. They are a third-generation barber, having followed a trade that has already been part of their family for generations.

After ten years at the heart of the town, the team is now looking ahead to the future.

Asked what the next ten years might bring, the owner admitted it is difficult to predict, particularly with the high street continuing to change.

But the focus remains on continuing to work together, looking after customers and adapting to whatever comes next.
