More than 100 jobs could be at risk as Greggs plans to stop manufacturing at its factory in Treforest.

The bakery giant wants to turn the site into a distribution centre, as part of nationwide changes to its manufacturing operations.

Caerphilly Observer understands 101 jobs could be at risk in Treforest. However, Greggs declined to confirm, when asked by Caerphilly Observer, the total number of jobs at the factory.

The plans, announced on Wednesday September 30, come despite “strong business performance” from the firm, which has grown from 2,181 shops in 2021 to 2,796 shops.

Since 2024, Greggs has invested more than £300 million into its manufacturing and logistics network, which it says will enable it to support at least 3,500 shops across the UK.

The company, which has more than 33,000 employees across the country, wants to focus its manufacturing across six sites. These are Clydesmill, Gosforth, Balliol, Leeds, Manchester, and Derby.

Greggs confirmed its shops will be unaffected by the proposed changes.

A consultation process will begin before any changes are implemented, with affected employees and their union representatives taking part.

Greggs chief executive, Roisin Currie, said: “To continue building a successful business for the future, we must keep evolving alongside changing customer expectations. We want to ensure Greggs remains a strong, sustainable business for decades to come.

“Greggs manufacturing and logistics network remains a key strength of the business, and these proposals are intended to strengthen our manufacturing network, improve efficiency and ensure we remain well placed for the future while continuing to deliver the quality, value and service our customers expect.”

However, the proposals have been branded “devastating” by The Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU).

General secretary Sarah Woolley pointed to Greggs’ strong performance and said: “Against that backdrop, our members will understandably be asking why their jobs and livelihoods should now be put at risk in the name of efficiency and future progression.

“The workers affected by these proposals have played a huge part in getting Greggs to where it is today. They cannot simply be dropped like stones as the company moves on to its next phase of growth.”

Ms Wooley said the union will “scrutinise these proposals in full” during the consultation, and “do everything within our power to fight for and protect jobs”.

“These are not numbers on a spreadsheet,” she said. “These are people with mortgages and rents to pay, families to support and years, in many cases decades, of service to Greggs.

“Growth and investment should provide greater security and opportunity for the workforce that helped create that success, not leave those workers wondering whether they still have a future in the business.”

Pontypridd’s Labour MP, Alex Davies-Jones, said she has contacted Greggs to arrange an “urgent” meeting over the matter.
