Islwyn MP Chris Evans has praised the work of Trinant Primary School for teaching youngsters about the importance of saving.

Islwyn Community Credit Union helped school children set-up their own credit union saving scheme. Despite only being in existence a couple of months the credit union is paying dividends, with 56 members and over £570 saved by pupils in a couple of months.

At a recent special assembly, Mr Evans, who himself recently opened an account with Islwyn Community Credit Union, awarded certificates to the young savers congratulating them on their successful launch.

He said: “I was delighted to be able to attend a special assembly and personally congratulate the young savers at Trinant Primary School.

“During tough economic times many areas in Islwyn are targeted by doorstep lenders who offer loans at extortionate rates of interest. Credit Unions help prevent people being driven into the hands of these loan sharks.

“It is so important that future generations get into good saving habits early in order to help them manage their money better when they are older.

“I would like to pay tribute to all the pupils involved as well as the Islwyn Community Credit Union who have helped set up the schools credit union.”
