Blackwood Miners’ Institute set for £750,000 revamp

Blackwood Miners’ Institute is being lined up for a £750,000 revamp.

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet will consider a report on Tuesday June 28 outlining the improvements.

Council leader Allan Pritchard said: “If agreed, these works would ensure that the building is fit for purpose for future generations and will continue to be a beacon for community arts in South Wales.”

If the refurbishment scheme is given the green light by councillors, the work will be carried out in three phases.

Phase one will see the building made weather-tight with a new roof, the main facade cleaned and repointed and demolition of the Lesser Hall to improve vehicle access at the rear of the building.

New seating in the main auditorium and the redecoration of the reception and theatre area will be phase two.

Phase three will see new fire doors and flooring repairs as well as new changing room.

The building is Grade 2 listed and any work will require permission beforehand.

If the plans are agreed, the council hopes for work top start immediately.
