Caerphilly doctor Edward Erin struck off for abortion bid

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:59, Wednesday June 29th, 2011.

A doctor jailed for trying to induce a miscarriage on his pregnant lover has been struck off.

A General Medical Council (GMC) disciplinary panel found Edward Erin, originally from Caerphilly but at the time living and working in London, had “shown no remorse”.

Erin was jailed in 2009 for six years after he poisoned his lover with drugs when she fell pregnant and refused an abortion.

Bella Prowse was a secretary at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington where Erin was a chest consultant. She became suspicious that Erin was spiking her drinks and called the police. She later gave birth to a health baby boy.

Erin was found guilty of two charges of attempting to administer poison.

The GMC said: “The panel noted that this case is concerned with grave breaches of good medical practice.

“It is concerned that Dr Erin’s offences were premeditated acts, using his medical skills and knowledge to attempt to cause serious harm to others.

“As a doctor, he knew or should have known that Methotrexate in particular could cause long-term harm to his intended victim and her unborn child.

“The panel considers that Dr Erin has never acknowledged fault in this case and has shown no remorse for his actions and the panel has received no evidence to suggest he has now gained insight into the gravity of his actions.”
