A mother from New Tredegar who uses reusable nappies for her baby has been rewarded for her efforts.

Joanne Mayo won a real nappy prize pack after entering a special draw during Real Nappy Week recently.

During the week Caerphilly County Borough Council held three information roadshows, in New Tredegar, Risca and Pontllanfraith, explaining the benefits of using ‘real’ nappies.

Cllr Lyn Ackerman visited Joanne at home to hand over her prize and congratulate the family on their green approach.

She said: “I would urge more parents to follow Joanne’s example and use real nappies for their babies. Choosing real nappies over disposables is a fantastic way to cut the cost of looking after your baby, and of reducing the amount of waste you produce.

“More and more parents are discovering the benefits of real nappies, and realising how easy they are to use. Nowadays-real nappies come with Velcro or popper fasteners so you don’t need to worry about safety pins, there are lots of different styles available, and you can use them for more than one child.”

Welsh families throw away around 200 million disposable nappies every year which go to landfill and take up to 500 years to decompose.
