Caerphilly Council set to underspend budget by £6million

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:18, Friday July 8th, 2011.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is set to underspend its budget by £6million this year, according to a recent report.

Cllr Colin Mann, deputy leader and cabinet member for resources, welcomed the report.

He said: “Our overall budget picture shows we are in a healthy financial position and this clearly highlights that our financial strategy is proving to be very effective.

“The public sector is facing difficult times at the moment and many local authorities are facing tough decisions about their future, but we in Caerphilly are leading the way and bucking the trend thanks to our robust planning and effective budget management.”

Savings were found in departments such social services, environment and the chief executive’s office.

The cabinet also considered a report this week outlining plans to invest £377,000 from its reserves in a range of environmental improvement projects.

The money will be used to purchase new street sweeping and litter collecting equipment, gum removal machines and improved CCTV at recycling sites.

I usually have, and still have, little faith in any political persuasion. It is therefore so enlightening to read this report (IF true) that CCBC has controlled spending and has avoided debt by adopting 'good housekeeping'.

Congratulations to all concerned and I wish for CCBC, of whichever colour, to continue this excellent standard of stewardship.
