The name of the proposed housing development on the site of Caerphilly’s Miners’ Hospital has been chosen by a Caerphilly resident.
Housing association United Welsh and developers Lovell have said the scheme will be known as The Beeches Village, or Pentref y Ffawydd.
The name was chosen as part of a competition won by Hendredenny resident Julie Grant.
Mrs Grant, who has been awarded £100 John Lewis Vouchers for suggesting the winning name, said: “I felt that the name Beeches should stay because of the history and village because it is nice to have a collective name for the community, plus it is a bit different. It fits.”
The historical Beeches building will remain when the hospital closes this autumn and will reopen as a community centre run by The Caerphilly Miners Community Centre Management Committee.
Gareth Davies, head of development at United Welsh said: “The partnership working on this project has the key objective of delivering homes for all whilst creating a fully cohesive community.
“By honouring the history of the site and incorporating it into the proposed development name Mrs Grant has identified a name that will represent both the past and the future of this community.”
Kate Rees, regional sales manager, Lovell Wales and South West, said: “We were delighted to be asked to partner with United Welsh and participate in the programme of community engagement.
“The idea of involving the local community in naming the development is an excellent one and we were thrilled with the number of entries. We look forward to playing our part in the future development of The Beeches Village in the coming weeks and months.”
Last month a planning application for the 82 home development was submitted to the council.
Caerphilly District Miners’ Hospital will be closed down once the new £172.7million Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr hospital is opened in the autumn.
