Summer drink drive campaign a success for Gwent Police

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 10:00, Thursday August 4th, 2011.

A summer crackdown by police on drink drivers, and those under the influence of drugs, saw 69 arrests.

The crackdown was part of the national All Wales Summer Anti Drink/Drugs Driving Campaign.

Chief Inspector John Pavett from Gwent Police’s Roads Policing Unit said: “In Gwent, 69 out of the 4,497 motorists stopped returned a positive breath test or failed/refused to supply a breath test. This equates to 1.5%.

“Although the percentage is low, one person getting behind the wheel after they have drunk alcohol is one too many and we are still disappointed that people continue to choose to break the law in this way.

“Drink driving is one of the five most common causes of collisions on our roads. Gwent Police remains focused and committed to working with partner agencies and members of the public to do all it can to raise awareness of road safety and target offenders, this continues 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
